Soap Science Saturday: What Actually Happens When We Make Soap? The Magic of Saponification

Ever wondered how a simple mixture of oils and goat milk turns into the creamy, skin-loving bars you see on our shelves? It’s not magic—it’s science! At RC First Fruits Farm, we believe in transparency and education, so let’s dive into the chemistry behind every bar of our handcrafted goat milk soap.

What Is Saponification?

Saponification is the scientific name for the chemical reaction that creates soap. When we blend natural oils (like olive, coconut, and shea butter) with an alkaline solution (lye), something amazing happens: the mixture transforms into soap and natural glycerin.

Oils + Lye = Soap + Glycerin

Glycerin is a natural byproduct that acts as a humectant, drawing moisture to your skin. Unlike many commercial soaps that remove glycerin and add harsh chemicals, our process keeps things simple and gentle—just the way nature intended.

Why Goat Milk?

We use fresh goat milk from our own Nigerian dairy goats in every batch. Goat milk is packed with vitamins (like A, D, and B6), minerals, and gentle proteins that help nourish and soothe sensitive skin. The natural fats in goat milk also create a creamier, more moisturizing bar.

Our goats are raised right here on our small family farm, with sustainable and ethical practices at the core of everything we do. We care for our animals like family, and you can taste and feel the difference in every bar.

Clean Ingredients, Simple Science

Our soap recipe is simple: goat milk, olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and a touch of castor oil for bubbles. We use only high-quality fragrance oils—no harsh detergents, no parabens, no unnecessary chemicals. Each batch is carefully measured, mixed, and poured by hand, then cured for four weeks to ensure a gentle, long-lasting bar.

Transparency Matters

We’re proud of our process, and we love sharing it with you. That’s why we make videos for anyone curious about how our soaps are made (and how our goats live!). We believe you deserve to know exactly what goes into the products you use on your skin.
